World Children's Rights Day, celebrated annually on November 20, marks the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. While it is commemorated with events worldwide, the pressing question remains: Are children's rights genuinely safeguarded?
In many regions, children continue to be deprived of their most fundamental rights, including the right to life. Ongoing wars and oppressive regimes result in countless children losing their lives and futures.

EVERY 10 MINUTES, A CHILD DIES
Since the onset of Israeli attacks on Gaza on October 7, more than 5,000 Gazan children have been killed, robbed of their dreams and futures. Tragically, since the start of these attacks, a child has died every 10 minutes, with 577 infants losing their lives before even reaching their first birthday.
In just three weeks, the number of children killed in Gaza has surpassed the total child fatalities in global conflicts over the past four years. Despite these blatant violations of international law during this 45-day period, the world remains silent, while "World Children's Rights Day" is marked with decorative posters and marketing campaigns.

1 MILLION CHILDREN HELD IN CHINESE CAMPS
In East Turkestan, a region long ignored by the global community, Uyghur children are being forcibly separated from their families and placed in indoctrination camps.
China is reportedly holding over 1 million Uyghur children in more than 4,000 camps, where they are subjected to systematic assimilation efforts aimed at erasing their cultural identity.

AFRICAN CHILDREN DEPRIVED OF THEIR CHILDHOOD
In Africa, a continent exploited for centuries by Western powers, children face immense hardships. Many are forced into labor at a young age, with limited access to education or healthcare.
In this region, one in two children is unable to attend school, and countless others lose their lives to infectious diseases and malnutrition.
OVER 30,000 SYRIAN CHILDREN KILLED
The children of Syria, enduring over a decade of conflict under the Assad regime, have been stripped of the rights outlined in the Convention.
Over 30,000 Syrian children have died as a result of attacks and bombings, while another 24,000 have been left disabled. Millions of Syrian children have either lost their families or been forced to flee to neighboring countries, seeking refuge from violence and persecution.

700,000 CHILDREN DISPLACED IN UKRAINE
The war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has similarly devastated the lives of children. Reports indicate that over 700,000 children have been displaced, seeking safety in neighboring countries.
50 MILLION REFUGEE CHILDREN WORLDWIDE
According to UNICEF, more than 50 million children worldwide are currently refugees. A 2015 UNHCR report noted that nearly half of all refugee children under its mandate originated from just two countries: Syria and Afghanistan.
World Children's Rights Day serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to uphold the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Without tangible action and accountability, millions of children around the world will continue to face violence, displacement, and deprivation.
